As a teacher and someone who’s had to learn to accommodate many learning styles, I know how important it is to have good study habits. Here are my top five tips to help your child make the most of their study time:

  1. Set Up a Dedicated Study Space

Having a dedicated study space is a game-changer. Find a quiet spot—definitely not the bedroom or living room where they will be tempted to relax, or spend extra time on screens. A space just for studying sends a signal to the brain that it’s time to focus. I personally do most of my work in coffee shops or libraries. I'm in one right now!

  1. Stick to a Routine

Consistency is everything! Have your kid hit the books at the same time each day—right after school or possibly first thing in the morning before breakfast. Making studying part of your child's routine helps it feel more natural and will become less of an argument for you in the long run.

  1. Make the learning Active! Not Passive

Keep it engaging! Encourage your child to explain what they’ve learned in their own words after each page, try having them teach it to someone else, or use flashcards. These active techniques are way more effective than just reading from the page. When teaching multiplication, I use playing cards to turn it into a game I like to call Math War!. Connect with me and I will happily show you how to play.

4. Break It Down, Reward Yourself

Big topics can be overwhelming, so help your kid break things into smaller pieces. I’m a big fan of rewarding myself with a treat after finishing a section—it makes the process more fun and keeps motivation high.

5. Take a Break

Remind your child to take breaks! I love using a timer to stay on track. I have a giant one in my classroom and use my phone when I am tutoring. If the timer goes off and they’re still in the zone, it’s totally fine to push through for a few extra minutes. Breaks help keep your child's brain fresh.

With these tips, your child can build strong study habits that will stick with them in the long run. Happy studying!
